Bhubaneswar: Cheers rang out in the Chanakya hall of Swosti Premium as the College of Engineering and Technology (CET), Bhubaneswar won ‘Mettle Meet 2016’, a quiz extravaganza organised by Orissa POST Friday as part of its fifth anniversary celebrations. CET was among the 18 select colleges that took part in the state-level quiz, the first of its kind organised in the city.
In the crucial adrenaline pumping final round that had six teams vying for the top prize, the city-based CET secured 83 points, while Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) bagged the second position by securing 76 points. Ravenshaw Junior College, Cuttack, came third by bagging 72 points.
CET team was awarded a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, while the first runner up got Rs 50,000 and the second runner up got Rs 25,000 for their outstanding performances. The awards were handed over by the editor of Orissa POST Tathagata Satpathy and the chief executive Adyasha Satpathy.
Quizmaster Venkatesh Srinivasan was all praise for the participating institutions. “The performance of the participating teams was overwhelming. I had to tweak some questions in the final round keeping in mind their preparedness and performance in the preliminary rounds,” he said.
The event started in the morning. The 18 teams that were divided in three groups, locked horns with each other in the three preliminaries to qualify for the final round. The ones who made it to the finals apart from CET, KIIT University, and Ravenshaw Junior College, included Utkal University, Bhubaneswar, SCB Medical College, Cuttack, and Sai International School, Bhubaneswar.
Tathagata Satpathy, who congratulated the winners, said “The quiz was organised to mark five successful years of the only homegrown English newspaper of Orissa. The state is enriched with rich talent but we often lack formal organisation of quiz competitions of big magnitude. We have taken a step in this regard and in the days to come we also plan to organise regional quiz contests.”
“The culture of quizzing is in bad health in the state. We want to bring the tradition of quizzing back to the state. We now plan to make quiz shows an annual event by our newspaper,” said Adyasha Satpathy.
Students who attended the event also appreciated the efforts of the newspaper in organising such an event on a grand scale.
“We were expecting excellent rounds of quizzing keeping in mind the large number of participations and a reputed quizmaster conducting it and our expectations were really fulfilled,” said Siddharth Mishra, one of those who represented KIIT University.
Eminent personalities from various walks of life witnessed the quiz. These included information and public relations minister Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak, director general of police KB Singh, OUAT vice chancellor Surendranath Pasupalak and other important personalities from the fields of politics, administration, bureaucracy, industries and academics.
The event was organised with the partnership of TEAM and Xpose. TEAM helped ensure that the outdoor advertisement had an impact while Xpose helped manage and make the event a success.
